THE ARTIST BEHIND THE CANVAS

Yana Kisic
Artist Statement
The beauty of the human condition lies in our ability to perceive ourselves as both parts and a unified whole, and this condition is central to my practice. In my painting, human figures are often constructed from basic shapes and a few primal colors. Fluid curved lines connect the parts and blur the boundaries between the parts and the whole, and between individual and its environment.
The work does not simply describe this duality—it produces the conditions through which it is experienced.
The viewer is invited to shift between perceiving the figure as a collection of parts and as an integrated whole, recognizing both conditions as inseparable. Influenced by perceptual investigations, I approach reality as something that emerges through observation. My meditation practice functions as a research tool through which I explore and experience this condition.
Biography
Yana Kisic is a contemporary American artist, born in Belarus and based in Naples, Florida.
She began making art as a way to bring together fragmented parts of herself, driven by a search for a more authentic and unified expression. This inquiry started during her BA in English, with a concentration in women’s studies at Cabrini University, where questions of identity and selfhood first took shape. It deepened through her clinical training in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, where the human being is approached as an interconnected system rather than separate parts. Her meditation practice further informs this investigation, providing a direct method for understanding how perception shapes experience. Within her work, human forms are reduced to simple shapes and a limited palette, where fluid lines and subtle spiral structures connect fragmented elements into a coherent whole.
Her work examines how individuality emerges from fragmented elements while remaining in constant interaction with its surrounding field, where the figure both shapes and is shaped by the environment it inhabits.
Series: Fields of Tension
This series investigates the individual as a point of tension within a larger spatial field. Figures emerge from structured, geometric environments where space is not passive, but actively shaping and reshaping the form. Spiral structures concentrate attention, while linear divisions impose order and resistance. Intersections of gold introduce a force—an energetic axis that activates the composition. Across the series, the figure shifts from being shaped to shaping. It becomes the force that organizes the space around it.
